Spirits, Giants, Heroes, & Witches

In a polytheistic practice, there both is and is not a line that is understood to exist by practitioners.  The line of which I speak is the line defining the difference between Gods and not-Gods, between spirits of place and spirits who just happen to inhabit or frequent such places, between heroes and human or other types of spirits who can and do undergo apotheosis to rise to become demigods or even full-fledged deities.  This is not just a thin line but a blurry one.

This is not merely a matter of Western polytheism being disorganized, confused, or poorly understood -- it is a feature of many polytheistic systems.  Chinese folk religion and Shinto in Japan also have these overlapping definitions and blurry lines characteristic of a multi-faceted spirit world with fluid categories and shifting power dynamics.
